Climate Watch

The Climate Watch initiative, conducted biannually in winter and summer, invites volunteers to observe specific bird species—such as bluebirds, nuthatches, and goldfinches—to assess how these populations are responding to climate change. Participants collect data within designated 10×10 km squares, contributing valuable information to validate and refine Audubon’s climate models.

Great Backyard Bird Count

Additionally, the Great Backyard Bird Count, held each February, encourages individuals of all ages and skill levels to count and report birds over a four-day period. This global event, co-sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, helps track bird populations and migration patterns, providing critical data for conservation efforts.

Christmas Bird Count

The National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count started in 1900 as a rebellion against the traditional holiday “bird hunt”, and has evolved into the longest running citizen science project in the world  – proving that ordinary people with binoculars can drive real conservation science.
